Launching the Earthworm Society of Britain
The Earthworm Society of Great Britain and Northern Ireland aims to promote and support scientific research so that earthworms and their environment can be better understood. Through its work the society aims to encourage the conservation of earthworms and their habitats and to educate and inspire people so that these fascinating creatures may continue to be enjoyed in the future
To launch the Society we will be holding a public event to find out what is the best method for worm charming.
The Worm Charming Experiment
Worm charming is a fun competition to see how many earthworms can be extracted from the soil without digging. We will be testing four methods to see which one works the best. They are:
- Fork twanging
- Grunting
- Surface tapping
- Alternative methods – these could be singing or chanting, crystals or any other method that does not disturb the soil. You may have your own ideas.
Working in teams, participants will have 30 minutes to charm as many earthworms out of the soil as possible. The earthworms will be counted and prizes awarded for the most earthworms charmed.
Charmers will also have the chance to identify the earthworms they collect with the help of experts from the Society.
