The Earthworm Society of Britain (ESB) aims to promote and support scientific research so that earthworms and their environment can be better understood.

Through its work the society aims to encourage the conservation of earthworms and their habitats and to educate and inspire people so that these fascinating creatures may continue to be enjoyed in the future.

You can help support us by becoming a member! We're also often out and about at bioblitz events so come and say hello and find out more about these fascinating creatures.

About us

The Earthworm Society of Britain (ESB) is a non-profit organisation that was set up in 2009 to ensure that earthworms are represented in the biological recording community and wider biodiversity sector. The society is run entirely by volunteers and funded through grants, membership subscriptions and donations.

Our volunteer committee is chaired by Emma Sherlock, earthworm specialist at the Natural History Museum London and includes volunteers with dedicated roles in recording, communications, membership, digital resources, education, finance and administration.

Aims of the Society

The ESB aims to promote and support scientific research so that earthworms and their environment can be better understood. Through its work the society aims to encourage the conservation of earthworms and their habitats and to educate and inspire people so that these fascinating creatures may continue to be enjoyed in the future.

The only society of its kind, the specific aims of the society are:

To conduct research into earthworms in the UK
To promote knowledge and appreciation of earthworms within the non-scientific community
To educate the non-scientific community in earthworm biology and ecology

We will do this by running the National Earthworm Recording Scheme and training people to collect and identify earthworms, representing earthworms within the biodiversity sector and supporting earthworm research projects, such as Earthworm Watch.

4. European Earthworms in Agricultural Environments

Producing a key to unlock meaningful earthworm surveys in disturbed/agricultural areas across Europe. Whilst there are hundreds of species recorded in Europe- most of the diversity is to be found in mountainous or undisturbed environments. This project hopes to encourage surveys across Europe to be carried out to species level, so providing much more meaningful data and generating greater earthworm knowledge, whilst still being accessible to all.

The Earthworm Society launched the National Earthworm Recording Scheme (NERS) back in 2014 with the aim of addressing the lack of earthworm records available for the UK. This has included training and supporting volunteer earthworm recorders and working with research institutions to incorporate the data generated through research projects.

As of September 2022, the NERS database held 21,790 occurrence records for 30 earthworm species from 2683 sites - likely making it the largest national dataset on earthworm distribution of any country in the world. The Earthworm Society of Britain partnered with Forest Research and others to analyse this data to address the following aims:

Update the current knowledge of British earthworm species occurrences.
Identify species-specific habitat and microhabitat associations of British earthworms.
Reveal any biases and complementarities between recorder and research earthworm collection.
Inform how future earthworm sampling can be better focussed to improve our knowledge of earthworm ecology in the British Isles.

We're delighted to announce that the research has now been published in the European Journal of Soil Biology as an open access article for anyone and everyone to enjoy and use.

Some key research conclusions include:

Researchers and public earthworm recorders tend to sample different habitat types.
Most non-soil-based earthworm sampling is carried out by public recorders.

The 2023 Annual General Meeting for the Earthworm Society of Britain took place on 22 November 2023 virtually via Zoom (hosted by the Biological Recording Company). Full meeting minutes will be disseminated to all members and below is a summary of some of the highlights.

1. Chair's Report

Thanks so much to everyone for attending our AGM. I hope you’ll all be staying to listen to the talks by some of our fabulous committee members tonight. I’m very much looking forward to them.

Then onto business. This year there have been a few changes. We are still very much a biological recording and research-based society. So training new biological recorders, supporting and encouraging our existing ones, keeping our data as accurate and useful as possible (with stringent verification), categorising entries making them as useful to the research community as possible, and targeting our sampling to enable us to capture earthworm data where we are lacking it. This work grows and evolves to greater scales year on year and the society is still a leader in the sector with this, which is excellent. The change though is that the FSC BioLinks project which we were partners on, ended and so we have had to forge a new way with our training courses. Keiron, who I’m sure you know, our excellent Recording officer, has started up the biological recording company- running excellent talks but also training. So we have been able to develop a new partnership and the training can continue. Some training is free others is paid for but it’s always reasonable and provides the excellent launchpad our new recorders need to get started. Keiron will update you on the details of all this but things are going from strength to strength.

All this work is now paying off with some significant achievements and news this year. The paper, I mentioned last year, which Frank working on and had presented at the International Earthworm Ecology Conference in France has now been submitted for publication. It has used our fabulous recording dataset and is changing the way we look at our sampling strategy and arming us with knowing a lot more about the conservation status of earthworms in the UK and how they specifically are tied to their habitat. This is hugely important work and will be used by Natural England and other policy-making bodies to inform choices in the future.

We have teamed also up with the biological recording company, the Darwin Tree of Life programme and earthworm researchers from Dublin to establish the first record of Kenleenus armadas in the UK, and will be releasing a post about that soon as well as establishing categorically the presence of Eisenia andrei in our compost bins this year. Thanks to everyone who helped with this.

So we are making a big difference not just in the UK for our knowledge about the species we house but also are known and respected on the International stage. I am so proud of what the society- through our fabulous committee members and our amazing members and recorders, are achieving.

Our membership continues to grow and now sits at 510 members – nearly 90 more than last year. It’s thanks to membership contributions that we’re able to do all fo the work that we do and any non-members on the call are very welcome to join us by signing up via the link in the chat.

So the final thing for me to do is say a huge thank you to everyone for all their hardwork. Its not easy with busy lives ; Keiron has had to take on the Membership Officer role this year as well as the Recording Officer role, Kerry has moved to Ghana but is still managing to be an excellent Secretary and keeping us in line with meetings etc, Frank is now in New Zealand but will still be joining us tonight… just to mention a few.. So thanks so much to all our committee members, all your work and commitment is very much appreciated.

Dr Kevin Butt has released a new book focusing on the humble earthworm. Worm (ISBN: 9781789147940) is part of the Animal Series from Reaktion Books and was published on 23 October 2023. This 208 page paperback includes 104 illustrations (79 in colour) and is available for £13.95 from Reaktion Books:

This book has the basis of more than 35 years of scientific research by the author into earthworm ecology but is much more than that. As the title suggests, it covers all things worm-related. The opening investigates the way that worms were first perceived and classified and continues by exploring a host of living organisms considered to be and named as worms. These include well-known groups that live in soils but also many that are parasitic and found only in the bodies of other animals. In addition, there are animals with a worm-like morphology, even to this date mistaken for invertebrates, but amphibian or even reptilian in nature! The start of the book also considers the “concept of the worm” and how we as a species have interacted with, contemplated, and written of worms for centuries. The next part of the book looks at a variety of ways in which we interact with worms, in the garden, at school, in water management and even in charming competitions. Worms can even be considered as dietary items or perhaps used in some types of medicine.

A central section looks at soil biology and how we have learned much from, and since the time of, Charles Darwin about earthworm science. Details are provided of his research and how it relates to current thinking. There is still knowledge to be learned from animals known to science for centuries. In addition, worm-related material that is non-scientific is dealt with in a chapter of its own, considering art forms from literature, painting, cinema, and music. A return to science sees in-depth scrutiny of one well-known earthworm species, Lumbricus terrestris. Here, the life cycle is explored, with some unusual quirks even for earthworms, behaviours explained and the potential to assist us revealed. The final chapter of the book looks forward to the fate of worms and us in our rapidly changing world. It considers how our interactions with these species may be vital for the survival of all, given the roles that such creatures have, and that go unnoticed by so many. The whole book is an insight into the mysterious world of the remarkable but often underrated worm.

Identifying British earthworms currently requires collecting and killing specimens, to then use microscopic morphological features for identification. This is the biggest barrier to earthworm recording and limits the number of people who are willing and able to contribute earthworm species occurrence data to the National Earthworm Recording Scheme.

So, what if there was a way to identify earthworms live? So far, no live earthworm ID guide has proven accurate enough to meet the high standards of the National Earthworm Recording Scheme. This isn't necessarily because some earthworm species couldn't be identified live, but more likely because we simply don't have enough data on the natural variation in live ID characters within and between species to produce a reliable guide.

The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Biological Recording Company and Earthworm Society of Britain have teamed up on the Earthworm Image Recognition Project to see if image recognition technology can be used to identify earthworms from live photos. The project is funded by Defra and aims to produce a beta version of an app for farmers that will enable auto-identification of earthworms from photos.

In order to train the AI within the app, the Biological Recording Company will be gathering live photos of earthworms and then identifying each specimen using the established morphological features using a microscope and the Key to the Earthworms of the UK & Ireland (2nd edition) by Emma Sherlock. The ability of the AI to reliably identify all species of British earthworm is currently unknown, but by the end of the project, we will have an idea regarding which species can and can't be identified by image recognition technology. All of the photos will be taken using smartphones so that the AI is trained using the same quality of images that users of the app would be able to submit. With over 100 photos needed per species to train the AI, the Biological Recording Company has a number of earthworm recording activities coming up.

Earthworm Sampling Days

A programme of Earthworm Sampling Days will be hosted at a number of wildlife sites across England and Wales. During these events, participants will sample for earthworms and use their personal smartphone devices to take photos of the specimens using a specific protocol. Following photography of the earthworms, the specimens will be collected, killed and preserved so that they can be accurately identified by the National Recorder for Earthworms. All photos will be submitted following the event using an online submission form.

No experience is necessary as all participants will be trained on both earthworm sampling and the smartphone photography protocol. Furthermore, no photography skills are required - it's important that the images used to train the AI come from a range of devices and are taken by individuals ranging in smartphone photography skill level so that the training data represents the actual data that farmers would be submitting when the app is tested.

All of these events are free to attend, but booking is required.

Citizen Science Projects

Over the next few months, the Biological Recording Company will be launching a citizen science project that will ask the general public to send off live specimens from their gardens. This will help ensure the project can incorporate data from a wide range of species and geographic regions into the image recognition training library. For example, composting species (such as Dendrobaena venetea, Eisenia andrei and Eisenia fetida) are less likely to be found on Earthworm Sampling Days so asking the public to send specimens off from their compost bins can help to fill this gap in data.

More information about these citizen science projects will be released In late December 2023.

Existing Image Data

Finally, earthworm researchers will be contacted to enquire if they have existing live images of specimens that were later identified accurately to species. For example, the Darwin Tree of Life project has been photographing specimens before preserving them and may have some images that can be used for the image recognition training library.

Join like-minded people with an interest in recording wildlife observations for a day surveying earthworms. The specimens collected will help us to build up a a library of images for the Earthworm Image Recognition Project and generate earthworm species list for the site. All records will be added to the National Earthworm Recording Scheme database. Sampling earthworms involves conducting microhabitat searches and hand-sorting soil pit samples to collect specimens for identification by our trained earthworm recorders at a later date.

Participants will also be asked to take photographs of the earthworms that they collect and submit these to the Earthworm Image Recognition Project - an exciting collaboration with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology to create and test an app that will attempt to identify earthworms using AI.

What will the day involve?

Practical experience using a variety of methods to survey and sample earthworms.
Practical experience in collecting and preserving earthworm specimens.
Contributing to an innovative project involving smartphone photography and AI.
A chance to meet fellow like-minded people from a range of different disciplines.

Please note that this event will involve individuals collecting, preserving and killing earthworm specimens for identification purposes.

He has run over 100 earthworm training courses and events since 20214, covering a wide range of subjects including biology, ecology, surveying, identification and recording. Recording the UK's earthworms

All records generated through this event will be submitted to iRecord in order to share our findings with the site managers, the Local Environmental Record Centre and the National Earthworm Recording Scheme.

The photos generated will be shared with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and used to train an image recognition AI to assist farmers with earthworm identification.

Charles Darwin might be best known for his work on evolution and his time on the Voyage of the Beagle, but he is also recognised as the father of earthworm science. After 44 years of studying earthworms, he published a best-selling book dedicated to the group, which is still one of the go to resources for researchers today. Join us on Darwin Day to look back at the history of earthworm science and research and learn about some of the experiments Darwin did with earthworms.

Kerry Calloway is an earthworm recorder, course tutor and secretary for the Earthworm Society of Britain. She is very passionate about all aspects of natural history but particularly engaging people in the world of the humble but super important earthworm.

Recording London's wildlife

All records collected will be added to the LNHS iRecord activity in order to share our findings with the site managers, Greenspace Information for Greater London (GiGL), London Natural History Society (LNHS) and relevant national recording schemes and societies.

Grove Farm Nature Reserve

Grove Farm is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and a Statutory Local Nature Reserve (LNR). It is a hidden urban gem which provides a biodiverse natural space in North Greenford (Ealing). The deciduous woodland on Grove Farm contains broadleaf trees such as oak, ash, elm, hazel and blackthorn. Grove Farm has a particularly magnificent display of wood anemones in spring as well as native bluebells. It has rare trees including many wild service trees. All these species are indicators of ancient woodland. A stream runs along a valley through the site adding to its nature conservation interest.

This event is delivered by the Biological Recording Company in partnership with the Earthworm Society of Britain, Friends of Grove Farm and the London Natural History Society.
