Earthworm ID Course (2-days)

Cofnod logo

Earthworms are crucial for soil health, but we know relatively little about their distributions, population sizes and impacts from land management and invading species. This two-day course will look at sampling techniques, identification and ecology of earthworms. It is aimed at supporting and encouraging recording so we can establish a better picture of this species group in Wales. This course is delivered in partnership between the Earthworm Society of Britain and Cofnod, and more information regarding our 2-day courses can be found in the 'Earthworm Identification Weekends' section of our 'Learn with the ESB' webpage.

Please note that the course fee does not include accommodation or food. Please bring your packed lunch.

Day 1 will be field based and involve sampling a range of sites and habitats. Experienced recorders will be on hand to provide training and guidance to anyone new to earthworm recording. The aim of the day is to introduce the method for sampling for the National Earthworm Recording Scheme.

Day 2 will involve a lab-based identification course led by ESB tutors and is suitable for those with no experience or those that want to identify earthworms. Attendees are welcome to bring earthworms from their own gardens or other places and we will happily help with identification.

Please note that the sampling day will require a reasonable level of fitness and these courses involve the collection and preservation of specimens.
